A Day in Lille: Art, Architecture, and Autumn Leaves

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of experiencing a day trip to Lille, France. Nestled in the Hauts-de-France region, Lille is a city that effortlessly combines the old-world charm of historic architecture with the vibrant energy of modern art and culture. It’s truly a wonderful city. Here are a few highlights from our trip.

The Musee de l’Hospice Comtesse: A Journey Through Art

Our first stop was the Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse, a museum housed in a 13th-century hospice. The highlight of the visit was the Jef Aérosol exhibit. Aérosol, a prominent French street artist, had his works displayed in a manner that was both thought-provoking and visually stunning. The juxtaposition of contemporary art within a historic setting made the experience even more memorable.

Architectural Wonders of Lille

Lille is a city where every corner seems to tell a story, especially through its architecture. From Flemish Renaissance facades to modernist structures, the city serves as a living museum of architectural styles. As we strolled through the streets, it was impossible not to admire the intricate details of buildings that have stood the test of time.

The Main Square and Shopping Finds

Our day wouldn’t have been complete without a walk through Lille’s main square, a bustling hub surrounded by historic buildings and modern shops. I even found a couple of gems for my home—a Baobob candle from Memento Mori, a shop with an exquisite collection of candles and gifts, and another unique candle from My Jolie Candle. Both stores are highly recommended for anyone looking to bring back a piece of Lille with them.

Before heading back, we made sure to stop by the JonOne mural “Welcome to the station”. As big fans, it was a must-see. The mural is crafted with Portuguese ceramics, and is a vibrant display of his iconic style. We also stopped by a few art galleries. Each gallery was a treasure trove of creativity, showcasing works from both local and international artists. It was the perfect end to a day filled with art, history, and life’s little pleasures.

So, if you ever find yourself in the Hauts-de-France region, don’t miss out on a day trip to Lille. Whether you’re an art aficionado, a history buff, or simply someone looking to experience the beauty of a charming French city, Lille has something for everyone.
